What's the Difference Between an Oil Finish and a Film Finish?
Two families, two philosophies
Nearly every clear wood finish belongs to one of two families. Penetrating finishes — boiled linseed oil, pure tung oil, and the many "Danish oil" blends — soak into the wood surface and cure there. The wood still feels like wood; the grain pops; there's no plastic layer on top. Film finishes — polyurethane, lacquer, shellac, and waterborne acrylics — cure into a continuous layer on the surface. The wood feels like the finish, and the film is what takes the abuse. The practical trade-offs
- Protection. Film finishes win. A polyurethane film resists spilled water, alcohol, and abrasion in a way a thin oil finish cannot. Dining tables and kitchen projects generally get film finishes for this reason.
- Look and feel. Oil finishes win for many people. They give a low-sheen, close-to-the-wood appearance that flatters walnut and cherry especially. Thick film finishes can look like the wood is under glass.
- Ease of application. Oil is the most forgiving finish there is: wipe on, wait, wipe off. Film finishes demand more technique — brush marks, dust nibs, drips, and recoat windows are all real.
- Repairability. Oil wins decisively. A scratched oil finish gets another wipe of oil. A damaged film usually needs sanding and recoating.
- Speed to done. Films win: two or three coats and the piece is protected. Oils protect modestly no matter how many coats you apply.
A popular middle path is a wiping varnish — varnish thinned enough to apply like an oil — which trades some film thickness for oil-like ease.
What "VOC" on the can is about
Most traditional finishes carry their resins in organic solvents, and those solvents evaporate into your shop air as the finish dries. These are volatile organic compounds, and the US EPA's page on VOCs and indoor air quality explains why concentrations of many of them run consistently higher indoors than out, and why ventilation during and after use is the standard mitigation. Practically, this is why finish labels specify ventilation and why waterborne finishes — which substitute water for most of the solvent — have taken over so much of the market. Read the label of the specific product you're using; formulations differ widely, and the label is the document that actually governs your can.
One separate, physical hazard deserves its own sentence because it's genuinely non-obvious: rags wet with oxidizing oil finishes (linseed oil especially) generate heat as they cure and can self-ignite in a pile. Finish manufacturers print disposal instructions on the can for exactly this reason — follow them.
Choosing for a first project
For a first piece in poplar or pine destined for paint, none of this matters — see hardwood vs. softwood for that choice. For a first clear-finished piece, a wipe-on oil or wiping varnish is hard to ruin, teaches you what finished wood should look like, and can always be topcoated later. Save the sprayed lacquer for when the projects deserve it.
